Thick gloves and cold fingers can make it difficult to use a spool, gloved fingers overlap the edge of the spool and cold hands make it hard to grip small edges. Halcyon solved this problem by creating the industry’s only built-in handle. The flanged edge around the Halcyon coldwater spindle allows the spool's double-ender to act as a handle.
